About Outreachy
---

Outreachy provides internships in open source and open science. Outreachy provides internships to people subject to systemic bias and impacted by underrepresentation in the technical industry where they are living.

Outreachy internships are:

 💵 Paid - $7,000 USD total internship stipend
 🌍 Remote - both interns and mentors work remotely
 🕰 3 months - internships run May to August, or December to March

Past Outreachy interns are:

 ♀️  92% women
 🌈 4% transgender, genderqueer, or non-binary people
    64% people of color
    12% people from a historically disadvantaged caste or tribe

Outreachy internships run twice a year: May to August and December to March.


Important Dates
---

 - Feb 14, 2022 at 4pm UTC - Outreachy Twitter Chat with potential applicants
 - Feb 25, 2022 at 4pm UTC - deadline for open source communities to apply to participate
 - Mar  4, 2022 at 4pm UTC - deadline for mentors to submit projects

Internship funding
---

Open science and humanitarian open source projects are welcome to apply for Outreachy to fund their interns.

All other types of open source projects will need to find their own funding for at least one intern ($6,500 USD).


Mentor Duties
---

Mentors will need to:

 - volunteer for at least 5 hours per week from May 30 to August 23
 - create a list of newcomer-friendly tasks for applicants to work on during the 1 month contribution period
 - provide a project for an intern to work on for 3 months

Outreachy welcomes internship projects in both open source and open science. Outreachy internship projects may include programming, research, user experience, documentation, graphical design, data science, marketing, user advocacy, or event planning.
